An East Hartford company that develops virtual reality training courses for skilled trades has debuted a new system designed to prepare students for in-person clinical training and the certified nursing assistant state exam.

VRSim said its new VRNA program offers a portable and immersive experience that allows learners to refine their patient care skills — usually done in a lab — in a zero-risk setting.

The system is intended to supplement existing clinical and CNA courses, company officials, while easing demands on instructors and offering students more independent, self-directed opportunities for training.

The technology can also be adapted to various learning styles and has the added benefit of extending training resources to rural areas, where students may not have access to in-person labs, the company said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has ramped up demand for remote and virtual learning venues, particularly in health care, which had already been suffering a shortage of workers before the health crisis and was stretched especially thin as transmission rates and hospitalizations spiked.

The debut of VRNA marks VRSim’s first major expansion into the health field; its applications have mainly centered on welding, spray painting, construction, manufacturing and robotics.
