The Meta Quest 2 gains a free MR content creation suite

On Wednesday, immersive learning platform ShapesXR is debuting a toolkit for creating mixed reality (MR) assets and experiences. The free toolkit also supports shared MR content, allowing teams to collaborate remotely on a design.

The service presents Meta Quest owners with an MR content creation toolkit that has the power to create augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) projects and produce custom user interfaces and experiences (UI/UX).

The latest version of ShapesXR allows creators to activate the Meta Quest’s passthrough mode and place digital objects in the MR space. The platform’s 1:1 mode also contains tools to replicate real-world occlusion on a passthrough MR material. Additionally, following a Quest room setup, users can save the outline of walls and furniture as a reference resource.

ShapeXR tools offer a streamlined system to create MR content, with consideration for at-home developers and hybrid workers.

MR on the Meta Quest

Meta introduced MR functionality in early June. The Quest device received the features as part of the Big 40 update, allowing users to create MR outlines of real-world objects and spaces to improve user safety.

The Big 40 update also added The World Beyond, an immersive experience made to showcase the device’s MR function. The experience is available on the Meta Quest App Lab storefront.

The update comes as Meta steps up its MR content in preparation for its upcoming AR/VR devices amidst a significant reshuffle and technology refocus.

The Menlo Park-based firm is preparing for the release of its Project Cambria MR headset. The device runs on Meta’s Presence Platform for MR content and experiences.

Cambria contains high-resolution outward-facing cameras that enable a clear passthrough and full-colour MR assets. The Presence Platform also enables Meta to create online shared MR experiences.

Meta supports online social sessions for play but also aims to support immersive work environments and wellness platforms. According to a leaked memo, Meta is looking to launch Cambria in the second fiscal half (H2).
