The award was won at the Education Estates Awards 2024 in Manchester

WinidsorPatania Architects have been awarded the Inspiring Learning Space Award at the Education Estate Awards 2024 in Manchester, UK.

The XR space in West Suffolk College offers a space for businesses and the surrounding community to learn, develop, and collaborate.

The awards were setup to recognise quality, innovation and sustainability solutions among architects, contractors, consultants, and clients in the education space.

Giovanni Patania, Architect Director of WindsorPatania Architects Europe, explains: “We had different sources of inspiration for this project, which combined helped us deliver the wow factor our client wanted.

“We reimagined the likes of the Tesla factories in the US and the boxy Tesla Cybertruck, and even the minimalistic, monochrome interiors from the Men in Black films.”

Patania continued: “The XR Lab is truly an inspired learning space, where ambitious architecture embodies the function of the building.

“We are very proud to have been part of this exciting and game-changing educational initiative.”

‘World-Class’ Learning Journeys

XR Lab was commissioned by Easter Colleges Group, which WindsorPatania describes as a forward-thinking educational consortium that provides students with “world-class” and “life-long” learning journeys.

By opening itself up as a hub for businesses, the XR Lab will also help to generate income for the college, demonstrating its ability to work as a sustainable investment.

The futuristic, “pod-like” XR Lab include an Immersion Lab, Collaboration Theatre, Green Room, and Conference Room.

It has a steel structure with thermal and acoustic insulation to create the ultimate immersive experience.

Advanced cameras and microphones along with the latest AI-powered virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality enable interactive educational experiences.

By bringing the real-world and metaverse together in this space, WindsorPatannia can support next generation teaching experiences.

For Ryan Windsor, Development Director at WindsorPatania Architects UK and a former governor of West Suffolk College, thinks the XR Lab could help to take learning to the next level:

“It will enable world around us by getting the chance to explore innovative industries like engineering.”

XR for Education

Research has demonstrated that XR technologies can improve learning speed, retention, as well as overall outcomes.

There are challenges involved with these innovative technologies, however, such as creating facilities in a way that supports engagement, inclusivity, and teamwork.

To achieve this, WindsorPatania turned an existing hangar workshop into a light and welcoming place for students with the XR Lab itself at the centre. It says that its polished plaster exterior captivates students and opens the door to the future of learning.

The futuristic appearance of the space is compounded by a 3D triangular mesh to provides a visual connection to virtual environments, which complements the technology.

WindsorPatania is not alone in its venture to bring XR technologies into the classroom.

Earlier this month, Avantis Education launched Eduverse+ for ClassVR, an expanded content library designed to enhance virtual reality and augment reality experiences in schools around the world.

Last month, Meta announced the Meta for Education beta program, a product targeted at colleges and universities that the firm first teased in April. The solution aims to bring education-specific XR services to teachers, trainers, and administrators via the Quest portfolio of VR and MR headsets.
