Learn more about XYN: Sony’s revolutionary spatial content creation solution

While tech giants race to claim their slice of the spatial computing pie, Sony’s new XYN platform (that’s “zin” to you and me, by the way) is on the cusp of its full release.

The suite combines software offerings – including the XYN Motion Studio for motion capture and a spatial capture solution for transforming real-world objects into 3D assets – with innovative hardware like the XYN Headset, XR Head-mounted Display, Spatial Reality Display, and mocopi motion sensors.

Together, they promise to streamline how creators and engineers work with spatial content.

A Star-Studded Lineup

XYN is essentially a suite of tightly integrated hardware and software innovations, designed for spatial content creation.

The system’s crown jewels – a spatial capture solution promising high-fidelity 3D asset creation from real objects, and a specialised XR headset built specifically for content production workflows – are still under wraps, with no further info available on the XYN homepage.

However, while both remain in prototype stage, they are key elements of Sony’s ambition to create an end-to-end solution for spatial computing in business; the headset’s demonstration at CES 2025 giving a tantalising glimpse into what will be possible with XYN:

The XYN Ecosystem

Currently available:

  • Spatial Reality Display: 3D display for immersive content viewing
  • mocopi: Mobile motion capture system for 3D content creation

Launching soon:

  • XYN Motion Studio: Motion data PC application (March 25, 2024)

In development:

  • XYN Spatial Capture Solution (Prototype)
  • XYN Headset (Prototype)
  • XR Head-Mounted Display for Siemens NX integration

Real-World XYN Applications

It’s the real-world business applications that really make XYN intriguing.

Its potential spans several key industries. In film and animation, XYN Motion Studio’s 12-sensor motion capture and camera blending could transform character animation workflows, for example.

Yiotis Katsambas, VP of Technology at Sony Pictures Animation said:

With XYN, Sony is entering a new dimension of creativity. XYN helps studios like ours explore worlds in ways that it wasn’t possible before. I’m really excited actually to be part of this in some way, and more excited really about our artists and all the new workflow opportunities that it creates.

Product designers and engineers could examine virtual prototypes at actual scale through the XR Head-mounted Display’s Siemens NX integration, while architects could leverage both the Spatial Capture Solution for documenting spaces, and the Spatial Reality Display for client presentations.

Even cultural institutions could benefit, with museums using the technology to create digital archives, while offering visitors new ways to examine artifacts through glasses-free 3D visualisation

A New Frontier in Spatial Innovation

Another impressive feature is XYN’s emphasis on workflow integration. Rather than forcing users into a walled garden, Sony’s platform integrates with industry standards and third-party tools. They’ve remembered that professionals already have favourite tools and don’t want to start from scratch!

If XYN’s Spatial Capture Solution can deliver on its promise of easy, high-quality 3D asset creation, and if the XR headset truly streamlines production workflows, Sony may well have something special on their hands (and their heads too!).
