Immersive VR learning for medical training

Founded in 2018, PrecisionOS is a relatively new player in the VR collaboration market. But its unique USP has propelled it to incredible heights, incredibly fast.

PrecisionOS is a 3D-based surgical training platform meant for orthopaedics, addressing the huge disparity in training and skill levels among staff.

Traditional surgical training struggles to mimic the complexity of the real-world environment, meaning that physicians are forced to leave a lot of learning to when they are on-the-job.

PrecisionOS offers a smart alternative, letting instructors simulate surgical scenarios in VR, recreating conditions, and demonstrating the appropriate actions.

Right at the year of its inception, PrecisionOS picked up $2.3 million in Series A funding,  led by AO Invest from Davos, Switzerland.

Interestingly, the company’s co-founders have a gaming and software development background, while the CEO is a practising surgeon. This brings the best of both worlds, combining an accurate understanding of the needs of industry users with nearly 50 years of tech expertise.

Recently, the PrecisionOS software platform was expanded to include features that would help train orthopaedic surgical nurses, in addition to primary surgeons.

In March 2021, PrecisionOS announced that it was partnering with medical device manufacturer, Zimmer Biomet, for a series of training initiatives.

What Are the Key Features of PrecisionOS?

PrecisionOS has seen steady and uninterrupted growth in its three years of existence. Last year, it announced that it was able to drive a breakthrough in arthroscopy education, one of many trailblazing endeavours.

Let us look at the features powering PrecisionOS’ success.

High fidelity experiences

PrecisionOS delivers learning sessions with a high degree of psychological, sensory and physical fidelity. Learners feel like they are actually part of the virtual environment, and are present in an operating room when undergoing training exercises. This gives them the opportunity to tackle real-world situations with the option of failing safely.

On-demand access

Unlike traditional surgical training, PrecisionOS does not require any physical props or aids to deliver training sessions. This makes it easier to scale and access on-demand, providing the same, reusable experience to multiple learners.

Learning analytics

PrecisionOS combines knowledge dissemination/theoretical training with hands-on technical skill acquisition to provide holistic training. All of this progress data is monitored at every step and fed into a performance dashboard. Instructors can measure performance, assess progress, and fine-tune the learning path.

Training modules

PrecisionOS comes with tailored training modules for the orthopaedic industry. This means that you do not need to develop this highly specialised learning content from scratch and in 3D, saving precious time. PrecisionOS aims to deliver effective learning through regular practice and purposeful failure.

What Are the Benefits of Using PrecisionOS?

There are a number of reasons to use PrecisionOS, including its error-based learning approach and realistic simulations. The scalability and compatibility with all major VR hardware providers are also compelling advantages.

What’s Next for PrecisionOS?

The company is currently planning a VR solution for preoperative planning and simulation, meant for certified professionals planning real-world surgeries, in addition to its existing training solution.
