Sheffield Hallam University in the UK has recently announced that it has gone to tender for the procurement of a new ‘Immersive Workspace,’ along with supporting equipment, software, and warranties, for the University’s Institute of Technology (IOT).

The Immersive Workspace is part of Sheffield Hallam’s long-term strategy to continue providing an industry-relevant and up-to-date educational experience, with the University aiming to introduce immersive and innovative technologies to enhance not only the student experience but also the institution’s credibility.

The University noted that the new Immersive Workspace will provide an immersive learning environment that will be used to support a variety of IOT-based courses within Sheffield Hallam University, and will provide staff and students with the opportunity to realize their own ambition and assist Sheffield Hallam in becoming the world’s leading applied university.

The tender includes the supply, installation, commissioning, warranty, and maintenance of an Integrated Immersive Workspace combining both hardware and software to deliver a rich, audio-visual experience. This will encompass wall and floor projections, surround sound, and an enclosed space designed to simulate a range of immersive teaching and simulated environments.

These immersive environments could include:

  • Medical simulated environments;
  • Construction / build 360 content;
  • Immersive gaming / virtual reality (VR);
  • Live streaming of 360 camera broadcasts;
  • Immersive teaching environments.

The contract is valued at £375,000 excluding VAT, and lasts for a duration of 48 months. The deadline for receipt of tenders is January 11, 2024 at 11:00am GMT.

Equipment will need to be delivered and installed and training needs to be completed by September 1, 2024. Four members of university staff will also require full training, and this will need to be completed over the period between installation and the September 1 deadline.
