Studies have shown that immersive learning experiences facilitated by XR can significantly enhance learning retention and skill acquisition compared to traditional training methods. By immersing learners in realistic environments and scenarios, XR stimulates cognitive processes in ways that traditional methods cannot replicate. When learners actively participate in XR simulations, they not only absorb information but also develop practical skills through hands-on experience.

“Virtual reality technology may still be a nascent technology, but the science of learning has been around for centuries. Although the effectiveness of learning can depend on many variables, there are several factors that are generally irrefutable when it comes to enhancing knowledge retention: repetition, multi-sensory experience, and learning from mistakes. Repetition is a cornerstone of effective learning while engaging multiple senses or immersing oneself in firsthand experiences significantly enhances comprehension. Equally crucial is the opportunity to learn from mistakes, a process integral to long-term memory retention. VR excels in facilitating all these aspects

..with VR training, learners gain access to experiential learning on-demand, eliminating the need for costly repetitive in-person training infrastructure or travel. Moreover, VR environments provide a psychologically safe space for learners to make and learn from mistakes without real-world consequences, fostering a more robust preparative learning experience.”

Supporting research

Multisensory learning is proven to enhance retention.

This study (among many others) goes into some detail on why multi-sensory learning (combining visual, auditory, and other senses) is better for learning and memory than traditional single-format learning.

Microlearning is proven to improve retention.

This study found that integrating microlearning into traditional e-learning frameworks has the potential to increase knowledge retention and drive engagement. The same concept has been proven with several enterprise VR training customers who have consolidated or broken up lengthy e-learning or in-person training courses with short, engaging VR experiences, resulting in higher training engagement and effectiveness. Repetition is key to learning retention.

This study shows that repetition enhances the effects of activated long-term memory. Investing in a VR training infrastructure means that learners can have access to immersive training at any time and can repeat realistic skills practice sessions at-will.  Read more

The psychological impact is profound. VR’s immersive nature enables learners to feel emotionally connected to the content, leading to better information retention. The interactive aspect of XR allows for personalized learning experiences, catering to individual learning styles and preferences. This personalized approach enhances engagement and motivation, key factors in improving learning outcomes. For example, watch the video below to learn how we use generative AI to deliver incredible custom learning experiences.

Organizations across various industries are increasingly recognizing the potential of XR for training purposes. From healthcare professionals practicing surgical procedures in VR simulations to automotive technicians troubleshooting complex machinery in AR environments, the applications of XR in training are limitless.
