Remember back in the olden days… when you were in high-school, there was that one super-nerdy computer class, right? All the school geeks (mostly men, as I recall) just loved to take that computer course to fill their electives. If you were anything like me, you were moderately interested, but when you saw the audience you knew you didn’t belong there. If only someone could’ve told us then what we know now about the importance of computing skills in the modern workforce. I’m 100% certain the audience for that course would have been different, had we known.
Things have progressed since then, yes. But sadly, our education system today is no better at preparing students for the level of technical expertise that will be required of them in the years to come. As educators and parents, I fundamentally believe that we owe it to our children to prepare them for the future-state workforce requirements across America. If you’re with me on that, then I’ve got some encouraging news!!
Times are a-changing (thank goodness!). We’re now living in an age where our children’s future employers have begun taking tech education matters into their own hands. I’m referring to Intel, and its Tech Learning Lab tour across America. This mobile learning lab has built-in equipment for the hands-on demonstrations and lab practicals that high school students need in order to experience and fully comprehend the nature of what’s in store for them in their future careers.
If you’re an educator or parent, then you’ll probably be really excited to learn the topics that the Intel Tech Learning Lab are bringing to high school students around the nation. Those include:
- Robotics – Students are building and testing their own virtual robots.
- Virtual reality – Where students get a chance to experience 3D modeling, augmented- and virtual- reality with their own two hands.
- Artificial intelligence – Students begin identifying what AI is and how it impacts their everyday lives.
- Internet-of-things – Students discuss the future of tech and begin to anticipate how large of a role IoT will have in the future of work.
The emergence of Intel’s Tech Learning Lab marks a fundamental shift from how students have typically been exposed to the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics curriculums. The Tech Learning Lab utilizes advanced technologies in a classroom environment to turn learning into a sensory, impossible-to-forget experience, rather than the dry memorization and recitation of facts that it’s been in years past.
