Virtual Burning Man is still ongoing until the 15th, and it has some of the most bizarre virtual artwork imaginable, but you’ll need a headset.

The wildest and weirdest VR event of the summer, Burning Man’s Virtual Burn 2021, has been extended until September 15th. The COVID-19 pandemic caused Burning Man to be canceled in person for the last two years, however, burners can attend the surreal experience with a VR headset. Thanks to VR, many events and day-to-day activities have managed to continue over the last two years with the likes of ABBA holding virtual concerts and classrooms staying open in the metaverse. Virtual reality has truly been a useful tool to keep some sense of normality as daily life changed dramatically.

Burning Man is a psychedelic music festival that typically takes place out of The Black Rock Desert in Nevada. It is known for its eclectic, out-of-this-world musical shows by musicians and DJs from the world over as well as fans dressing in outlandish artistic outfits. At Burning Man, on the Saturday before Labor Day each year, there is a burning of a giant wooden effigy, followed by a party until sunrise. One of the core tenants of Burning Man includes artistic self-expression which is typically demonstrated by the amazing and unique set designs of each performer. Thanks to VR, people still got to experience the event this year which was out of this world.

Now, the organizers for Burning Man in VR, BRCvr, stated that the event will continue until the 15th of September due to the success it achieved, having over 90,000 unique sign-ins. The event features over 150 worlds created by BRCvr for users to explore featuring jaw-dropping surreal art which any veteran of Burning Man will want to check out. Users can interact with each other around virtual campfires known as ‚Mini Burns‘ where they can share their crazy virtual reality experiences.

Not Quite A Desert But It’ll Do

Users can access the event by going to the Virtual Burn online store and selecting a package. One of the options is SparkleVerse which opens up the option for users to view submitted works of art by Burning Man fans in their browser. Next is Burn Week Live which is the bulk of the metaverse experience wherein users can create a watch party, interact with a virtual campsite where others can broadcast themselves, and attend events like an effigy burn. Also available is the Dusty Multiverse option where burners use 3D avatars to interact with acts and other festival-goers and live chat.

The virtual reality event is totally free to attend online but is open to donations to keep the party going and support the developers, with a suggested donation of $20. The event ends on September 15th and is compatible with most headsets so be sure to go to the BRCvr website to reserve a place. Doing so can give you bragging rights to say you have attended Burning Man, technically speaking.
